The 'Workshop Model'  the JJ School of Arts Printmaking Studio and Clark House Initiative's pedagogical exercise in the form of a retrospective exhibition is in its 10th city, New Delhi, to which it returns after a similar retrospective at the IGNCA New Delhi,  curated by Robina Karode and Ram Rahman,  this exhibition follows the paths of Reddy and his workshops,  into art schools discussing his early experiments with Joan Miro and conversations with Brancussi,  Giacometti among others,  and most importantly Nandlal Bose,  through a set of drawings and prints that begin in Santiniketan, subsequently at Slade in London,  including his times in Paris particularly his interest in the Paris protests of 1968 and his move to New York where he made experimentation at the Cooper Union the conceptual basis of his practice.  

 

Krishna Reddy's Retrospective has traveled to the following institutions in the following cities:

The exhibition is slated to travel to Hyderabad,  Kochi,  Santiniketan ,  Guwahati and Lucknow in the coming months.  Apart from this Reddy has shown at the IGNCA , Kiran Nadar Museum of Art New Delhi,  Nature Morte independently,  and the Kadist Art Foundation,  Paris  &  Art Dubai Modern with the Clark House Initiative in the last two years.  The 'Workshop Model'  is made possible by the efforts of Judy Blum-Reddy, through  innovative forms of transportation to circumvent logistics,  and artist self-organising , thus remaining independent from the support of any art foundation or grant process.  

 

The Exhibition opens on the 22nd April 2015 at 5.30pm at the Galleries of the  ' All India art and crafts society', in the collaboration with Sir JJ School of Art, Mumbai. Shri A. Ramachandran (Padma Bhushan and an Eminent painter) is the Chief Guest.

Krishna Reddy came to printmaking from sculpture, as printmaking allowed him a degree of spontaneity and experimentation , he liked the idea of edition making without losing the spontaneous act - often erased by spontaneity, Reddy now creates his first 3D print in where a drawing , a study for a bronze sculpture 1968 - 70 found in his archives by Nikhil Raunak and Judy Blum , and then converted into a 3D model by Amol K Patil & Poonam Jain in Bombay and finally printed at the Lasipalatsi Media Library for the city of Helsinki on the 15th of April. The drawings were one of his many sketches for a series of prints and sculptures for celebrating the Paris Protest of 1968 . The project was made possible through the invitation of curator and artist Ahmed Al-Nawas and the Checkpoint Helsinki.

We are pleased to announce the first of the Clark House Krishna Reddy-Judy Blum Fellows, Nikhil Raunak will begin his residency in New York this April for 3 months, during which he will research and use the studio facilities at Flux House 2. The residency is supported by Judy Blum and Krishna Reddy for young artists to come live and practice in New York. Raunak will archive Reddy's drawings and prepare a project on experimental printmaking through his interactions with Reddy.

Nikhil Raunak (1988) often works with cryptic codes that critique conceptual practice in the arts, inventing languages, creating videos and drawings that all stem from his study of graphic printmaking and portraiture.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Clark House Initiative, established in 2010 by Zasha Colah and Sumesh Sharma is a curatorial collaborative concerned with ideas of freedom. Strategies of  equality have informed their work, while experiments in re-reading of histories, and concerns of representation and visibility, are ways to imagine alternative economies and freedom. Clark House Initiative intends to actively recall political and artistic figures into contemporaneity, and to question the recent rise of fascism in India based on exaggerated rumours of economic prosperity and nationalist pride.

Request for Proposals

The Arts Research programme supports scholars, researchers and practitioners to undertake research into the various histories and expressions of artistic practices in India. It seeks to foster wider perspectives, understandings, interpretations and engagements in the arts.
Proposals are invited across the arts and humanities from researchers and practitioners who are interested in undertaking research projects that could investigate marginalised or relatively unexplored areas; who intend to create spaces for dialogue between theory and practice; who offer new readings/frameworks of artistic practices; and who use interdisciplinary approaches to break new conceptual ground, among other things.
IFA specifically encourages projects in Indian languages other than English, so as to contribute to discourse in particular language contexts
Research projects should have clear research objectives, in-depth background survey, critical research questions, rigorous methodologies and specific outcomes that will be shared in the public domain. The outcomes could be books, essays, films, etc.
Who can apply?
The programme is open to proposals from scholars, researchers and practitioners across disciplines.
You are eligible to apply if you are an Indian national, a registered non-profit Indian organisation, or have been resident in India for at least five years.
If you are applying on behalf of an institution, please include background information on the organisation as well as the memorandum of association/trust deed, annual reports, and audited statements of accounts for the past three years.
Application Process
You may choose to write your proposal in any Indian language including English. The IFA staff would be glad to answer your questions regarding this programme. You can approach us to discuss your ideas or send us a draft proposal for our suggestions and comments.
Your proposal will be assessed with the help of external evaluators and all decisions on grants made by IFA will be final.
Please include the following in your proposal, so it is not considered incomplete:

The content of the proposal should have clear research objectives, in-depth background survey, critical research questions, rigorous methodologies and specific outcomes;
Supporting material, if any, which gives us a sense of your work;
Your bio-data;
A detailed budget breakdown that explains how funds will be used. Please also mention funds anticipated from other sources, if any; and
Your address, telephone numbers, and e-mail address

Duration of the Project
Your project may have a minimum duration of one year and a maximum duration of one year and six months.
Budget 
You can request for support up to Rs 4 (four) lakh.
You may budget for an honorarium of Rs 12,000 per month, subject to a maximum limit of Rs 1,44,000, for the entire duration of the grant. Please note that the total grant amount is inclusive of the honorarium.
Deadlines
You can send us your draft proposal by email but your final proposal, including your bio-data, supporting material, should be in hard copy only.
Draft proposals should reach us no later than May 31, 2015
Final proposals should reach us no later than June 30, 2015
No supporting material will be sent back to the applicant.
General Information:

Our funds will cover only project-related personnel costs, activities and travel, and can provide for modest equipment hire and materials, if necessary. Please ensure that each budget category pertains to a specific item of project-related expenditure
If you are an individual, please budget for an accountant upto Rs 3000 only
Please do not budget for institutional overheads, building costs and infrastructural development. We do not support buying of equipment either, but if you must buy  equipment for the project, you must return it to IFA after the project is completed.
If your proposal is short-listed, you may be requested to respond to questions that arise out of the evaluation process

ALWAR BALASUBRAMANIAM layers of wind, lines of time January 28 through May 2, 2015 Opening Preview, Tuesday, January 27, 6-9pm @ TALWAR GALLERY C-84, Neeti Bagh New Delhi – 110049 Talwar Gallery is pleased to present layers of wind, lines of time, , a solo exhibition of recent works by Alwar Balasubramaniam. In his latest work, Balasubramaniam, more commonly known as Bala, deepens his exploration of the natural forces around us. layers of wind, lines of time creates an environment of life-in-formation: forms receding into the depth of the walls, or stalactites seeming to grow spontaneously out of them. Drawing on and collaborating with nature, Bala creates works from wood, stone and metal that seem indistinguishable from those formed over millennia in the natural environment. Partly an homage to nature, partly a challenge to create something of beauty and simplicity that may appear to be natural, here Bala’s hand is felt as much as seen, present in the ways it moves like the wind through the matter around it. Inspired by a form shaped by the sea, Into One took Bala over three years to create, and to bring to a human-scale pitch of intensity. Highlighting the stratified way the natural world is shaped over time, Bala builds his works gradually, by way of accumulation and condensation. His wind works, created over months, employ movements of air: terrains of deposited dust and pigment that become timescapes on canvas. In Bloom and In-conversation, each thin layer of wood not only adds to but modifies the last, forming works that seem to emanate in waves. Complex but unified, the lines and layers of Bala’s work reveal the energies that, although imperceptible in any given instant, are constantly shaping and re-shaping the material world. Throughout his career, Bala has engaged with those forces we normally think of as peripheral – light, shadow, gravity – forces that nevertheless give form to our experience. Foregrounding the perceptual in his work, which often surprises or confounds, Bala playfully challenges viewers to question and ultimately expand the limits of their perception. Always more than meets the eye, each of his pieces is, as he says, “the trace of a thought,” evidence of the indelible marriage between form and idea. Bala’s work gives new weight to the tangible – weight at once symbolic, spiritual, and distinctly human. Alwar Balasubramaniam was born in 1971 in Tamil Nadu, India. His works have been featured in international exhibitions and institutions including The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), New York; The Phillips Collection, Washington, DC; Guggenheim Museum, New York; Mori Art Museum, Tokyo, Japan; Kiran Nadar Museum of Art, New Delhi, India; Essl Museum, Austria; École des Beaux Arts, Paris, France; 1st Singapore Biennale; and 18th Sydney Biennale.  from interactive art sessions for children and adults alike, they hope that with this year’s art week, Art will permeate everywhere.

The Press Conference will be attended by the GoodHomes Editor, Ronitaa Italia Dhanu, WWM CEO Mr. Tarun Rai, actress and celebrity Raveena Tandon, 

artist Jayasri Burman, Dean of J.J School of Fine Arts, Vishwanath Sable among other well known personalities of the art and media industry.

GoodHomes for Art – 2013

The first day witnessed a live installation conceptualized by sculptor Arzan Khambatta at the Phoenix Market City, the showcasing of Reena Kallat’s installation ‘Light leaks, winds meet where the waters spill deceit’ at the Times Tower, Lower Parel and an art competition for students of art at The Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalay. The days that followed saw an Art Flea Market, Live Performances and installations, Exhibitions, Pop-up Art Galleries, Art Trails etc.
